Hello everyone,

As part of my persuasive speech there are two action steps, I would really appreciate it if you all could do one of these! (If you're persuaded I guess).

The first action step is to upload a post to your favorite social media platform of yourself or an activity you're doing at home.

If you choose this option use the hashtag #StayatHomeComm122 and send me a screenshot.

The second action is to take a quick, five question quiz, that I created based off the CDC's guidelines for how to protect yourself and others. I will link the article and the quiz down below.

I would really appreciate if you would watch my speech and complete one of these steps!

Here is the link to the video of my speech:

https://youtu.be/fo3LERKKlNo

Here is the link to the CDC's article:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html

Here is the link to the quiz I created:

Thanks everybody! Looking forward to watching the rest of these speeches.

-Jenn

Jennifer Sowers evaluating Jonathon Truong:

Student Evaluation Form for the Persuasive Speech:
Speaker: Jonathan Truong
Respondent: Jennifer Sowers

How did you feel about the position taken on this topic before hearing the speech?
I don’t know much about traditional/herbal medicine. Because of my lack of knowledge I didn’t really have an opinion on it.
How effective was the introduction? Did it capture the audience’s attention?
I thought it was interesting that he started with Covid-19 and then talked about herbal medicine. I think it would be interesting to have more of a story at the beginning but it still caught my attention so that makes it effective.
Did the speaker adequately create the need or state the significance of the topic? Did the speaker appeal to the needs and values of the audience?
I was a little confused, I think the significance was herbal medicine is good for you for a variety of different reasons. I was interested in the topic but slightly confused about the need.
Was the speech organized, using signposting, good supporting evidence, sound logic, and smooth transitions?
I heard the thesis and preview which was good and heard a lot of the other points that we learned about during lecture so overall good. I think there could have been better transitions and more supporting evidence though.
Was the solution fully explained? Was the solution workable? Did it meet audience objections?
I didn’t hear audience objections mentioned. He did provide multiple solutions so that was good.
Comment on the specific action that the speaker requested.
My understanding is that the action is to drink hot water after a meal, learn about tai chi, or drink herbal tea. I liked the variety, I’m not sure how the first two are included in that but possibly just traditional practices cover it.
How effective was the ending?
I felt the ending was effective. Hit the points he needed to hit and reminded us why he felt it was important in the first place.
How effective was the speaker’s physical delivery?
A little choppy I think this could have been taken care of with a little more practice but it did make the physical delivery less effective.
How did you feel about the topic after hearing the speech? Were the speaker’s arguments convincing to you?
I definitely wanted to know more, it felt like I just got a taste of what herbal/traditional medicine was. I can’t say my mind was totally changed but it definitely piqued my interest.

Question: In part of your speech you said Covid-19 patients were taking herbal medicine with varying results. I’d like to know what it was they were taking/doing and also maybe the link to your source for that.

Evaluation Vincenzo

How did you feel about the position taken on the topic before hearing the speech?

I was indifferent to the topic

How effective was the introduction? Did it capture the audience's attention?

The introduction was difficult for me to understand and was not effective at capturing my attention

Did the speaker adequately create the need or state the significance of the topic? Did the speaker appeal to the needs and values of the audience?

The speaker adequately stated the significance of the topic as it applied to people who were football fans, but failed to appeal to the needs and values of non-sports following audience members.

Was the speech organised, using sign posting, good supporting evidence, sound logic, and smooth transitions?

The speech was adequately organised and presented each supporting point clearly.

Was the solution fully explained? Was the solution workable? Did it meet audience objections?

The solution was explained, but not fully workable. My objections - that some audience members may simply be inactive or disinterested in sports - went unmet.

Was there a realistic and vivid visualization of possible conditions created by the speaker?

No

Comment on the specific action the speaker requested

The speaker requested audience members to perform a football exercise as well as watch highlights of a game.

How effective was the ending?

The ending was not particularly effective nor ineffective

How effective was the speaker's vocal delivery?

It was very hard to hear the speech, I had to raise my volume a lot.

How effective was the speaker's physical delivery?

The delivery was good and the speaker maintained good posture

How do you feel about the topic after hearing the speech? Were the speaker's arguments convincing to you?

I still feel indifferent towards the sport

Yes. Good explanation with good citation.
Comment on the specific action that the speaker requested. I didn’t hear audience objections mentioned though.
My understanding is that the action is to drink hot water after a meal, learn about tai chi, or drink herbal tea. I liked the variety, I’m not sure how the first two are included in that but possibly just traditional practices cover it.
How effective was the ending?
The ending was succinct but I felt this was actually best for the effectiveness of this ending since so much information had been provided throughout the body of his speech.
How effective was the speaker’s physical delivery?
Very little verbal clutter which is great. I think there could have been a little more eye contact, but overall I felt he was comfortable and his delivery was good.

Speaker Eugene Choe

Prior to hearing the speech I felt that the situation of the virus was very serious.

The introduction did not particularly capture my attention in an effective way.

The speaker was able to state the need for taking precautions for public safety.

The speech was organised with supporting evidence, but lacked smooth transitions.

The solution was workable and met my objections.

There was a realistic visualization of consequences created by the speaker.

The specific action was practicing social distancing

The ending was ineffective

The vocal delivery could use improvement in the expression and sentence structure.

The physical delivery was lacking in that the speaker's eyes did not look at the audience and there was little to no movement.
